Reliably Measure Precise Plastic Components

MASS technology for higher productivity

When dealing with technology, whenever something spins or moves, there is a motor behind it. The smaller the motor, the more complex and delicate the individual parts. Nidec Motors & Actuators GmbH in Bietigheim-Bissingen ensures the quality of its motors using a ZEISS ACCURA II measuring device with mass technology.

The situation

The manufacturers of components for the automotive industry, industrial applications and medical technology are under increasing pressure for efficiency. At the same time, the quality of their products should at least remain the same or even be improved. Because of this, Nidec Motors & Actuators has invested in one of the most modern coordinate measuring machines available: the ACCURA bridge-type measuring machine from Carl Zeiss. It is used for initial inspection and prototype measurements of drive modules – small motors with or without brushes. "This was the only way we could guarantee that we could get precise measurements as quickly and efficiently as possible so that our entire value creation process would run optimally," says Ronald Frey, Laboratory Manager for Motors and Prototypes. Nidec's drive modules often consist of plastic enclosures reinforced with glass fiber whose characteristics are complex geometrical elements. For this reason, a measuring device with mass and Navigator technology was selected.

Higher productivity with MASS and Navigator

"The workpiece determines the sensor," is a central principle in customer consultations with Carl Zeiss. Active central VAST probes impress with high productivity. What's more, the central sensors with VAST are highly precise even with low position tolerances and can accommodate very long and complex stylus systems. The flexibility of the RDS stepping articulating system with VAST XXT is ideal for the measurement of injection molded parts. The RDS also impresses with its ability to make use of optical sensors such as the ViScan camera system or the LineScan laser scanner in a CNC capable manner. mass (Multi Application Sensor System) from Carl Zeiss is known for its ability to implement both a central probe as well as an articulating probe holder with different contact and optical sensors. Sensors can be quickly and easily replaced by the operator.

Satisfied customers

Alexander Klein, who is in charge of measuring technology, is very satisfied with the measuring machine and software. The graphic display and evaluation in CALYPSO and FlexReporting show the measuring results. The results are immediately understood by all participants, making misinterpretations a thing of the past. Drawing characteristics are electronically stamped for Nidec using CAQ software from IQS, i.e. every characteristic being tested automatically receives a specific name. These characteristics are automatically assigned the correct name and tolerance when they are imported into CALYPSO. The measuring technician only has to link these characteristics with the 3D model by clicking a mouse. ACCURA II significantly improves product quality. Klein used an example to emphasize the benefits: "A customer wanted a drive module with 'zero play' for a sunroof to ensure that the sunroof would move with practically no noise. Using the ACCURA II, we identified the modules that met these requirements and defined the required parameters. The display of the scanning lines in the CAD window was especially helpful." The end customer was very satisfied with the result and the display, and expressed this in a letter to Nidec.

Highlights from the user's perspective

The excellent measuring productivity is a direct result of mass and navigator technology. The VAST navigator, laser monitoring in the high-speed mode, the neutralization of centrifugal forces and dynamic calibration of the stylus make the ACCURA II a highly dynamic measuring machine. More components can be tested per hour than with the previous measurement processes. Because of VAST XXT's extremely low measuring forces of 0.01-0.13 N, sensitive plastic and punched parts can be measured using contact methods, which is particularly important for Nidec. This ensures that the plastic parts are not bent. According to Klein, the FlexReporting module on CALYPSO provides the best display of the results on the market. "With this measuring machine, we are prepared for any foreseeable measuring challenge. I am convinced that this investment will result in an even closer partnership with our customers."
